LIWP Educators Visit Washington DC
Teachers from the Long Island Writing Project had an opportunity to participate in the NWP Annual Spring Meeting in Washington D. C. Elyse Eidman-Aadahl, the NWP Director, addressed teacher-leaders from around the country who were meeting with congresspeople and senators to advocate on behalf of the NWP.
Heidi Atlas and Darshna Katwala met with congressional leaders and shared stories about teaching students with the support of NWP, the local work being done at the LIWP to support teachers ,as well as school and local communities. The meeting was a time to advocate on behalf of education, teachers, programs that focus on literacy, the teaching of writing, and the National Writing Project. Since the health care bill was being debated on the floor of the House and the Senate was holding hearings, Darshna and Heidi met with the educational aides for Senator Schumer and Representatives Kathleen Rice, Tom Suozzi, Lee Zeldin, and Peter King.
Part of the Spring Meeting was a workshop on fake news, entitled "Fighting Against Fake: A Survey of Today's (Mis)Information Landscape." It provided an overview of the current state of misinformation and gave educators some strategies to turn false, misleading or malicious examples of information into opportunities for news literacy learning and civic engagement.
A team of teacher-leaders, Andrea Darbee, Kristen Stritzl and Heidi Atlas also participated in a College-Ready Writers High-Needs school launch meeting to begin planning for the new CRWP (College Ready Writers Program) grant in partnership with the Westbury School District.
